Unit 54

This video is made up of the key camera shots and angles used when filming.
Roles: Actor and Editor.

This is our first attempt of creating a short video with a theme.
Roles: Story Board, Actor and Editor.

This is a video we had to create in random groups.
Roles: Director and Editor.

This is our second attempt at creating a short video with a film.
Roles: Story Board, Actor and Editing.

This is another short video of a theme.
Roles: Actor and Story Board.

Short film idea
How to airplane

First it will start with some one making a paper airplane, they will then throw it and it will go around a load of weird and funny places. At one point I would like it to hit a printed image of something and when it does the plane turns into an animation flying through the picture it will then leave and hit someone in a comical place. An idea I have for finishing it would be the airplane flying and hitting Carl whilst he is reading on the toilet.
The airplane will start in an ordinary place and fly through a variety of places.
There will be a variety of camera shots such as bird’s eye, establishing shot, worms eye and close ups.
When making it I may have to use stop motion to some extent to get the airplane to fly at the right speed.
There will also be digital animation for when the plane goes through the image.

Scene 1
A first person birds eye view of making the paper airplane
Scene 2
A establishing or medium shot of the paper airplane being thrown
Scene 3
A variety of different camera shots of the plane flying
Scene 4
A medium or close up of the plane hitting a printed image
Scene 5
Birds eye view of the animated plane flying through the image
Scene 6
The plane leaves the image and stops in front of a door , it will then open without force and then flies through
Scene 7
The plane then flies slamming the toilet door open and hits Carl when he is reading a book or something
Scene 8

Carl cries.

This is my first story board.

This is my improved story board.

This is one of my final attempts of the short video using a range of camera angles/shots.

Evaluation

For this unit we were asked too produce a short video with a topic of choice. The point of this was too explore a range of camera angles and shots aswell as learning how to edit video to a good standard. The topic I chose was to have a paper airplane fly through a number of comical places and to eventually hit someone.

The first thing I did to get a good idea on the standard of work I was hoping to produce was to look at a number of short videos. Whilst watching I made sure to pay most of my attention to the editing and the smooth cuts. Before coming up with my main idea I had a number of different ideas, some inspired by videos I had already seen. One of these ideas was to have a mock interview where the interviewer wasn't at all proffesional and the person being interviewed was very confused on what was happening. Another idea I had was to have a football tutorial but the person giving the tutorial was absolutely hopeless and had no talent at it. The third idea I came up with was a mockumentary on a disaster. The video would of been made up with fake interviews of survivors and reenactment footage. The final idea I came up with before the paper airplane idea was to have a trailer for a fake survival guide. Once I had all these ideas I went on to explain them in a bit more detail. Once I had done this i had a good idea on my favourite concept, which was the paper airplane.

Once I had chosen a main idea I went on to explain it in even more detail, giving a step by step reference on what I wanted to create. After completing this I moved onto a basic storyboard. I did this to get a better idea on the different angles and shots I wanted to use. After i got a really good idea on the shots and angles, I moved onto my final storyboard using more detail and notes. After I had finished this I moved on to create my video.

Due to creating a very detailed story board, I had a very good idea on the locations I wanted to use. Whilst I was filming I did learn about the whitebalance and the difference a small bit of lighting can make on the video. Whilst filming I came up with the idea of adding a small animation. I was going to do this by having the real plane hit a printed image on a piece of paper and then the animation would start as if the plane had flown into the picture. To do this I started to create a small (not very detailed) animtion using flash. Whilst filming I made sure i had multiple takes of the same scene, I did this to have a good variety to choose from when editing and because some takes didnt go perfectly.

After I had filmed all the scenes I needed i moved onto editing it all together. Whilst doing this I decided to use if any very little small transitions. This was because I didnt want it to look over produced or using a transition avoid editing the videos properly. Whilst editing I continued to use my story board as a guide to get the scenes all correct. While I was editing I did encounter a problem with the animation file corrupting meaning I was unable to open it on any computer/mac. This meant I had to lengthen certain cuts to make the film the right length. I also went on to add some of the failed attempts of the plane throwing after the credits. I then needed to add music, I did this by searching through random websites listening to the free to download music and once I had found the song I wanted I dragged it into the video. I then added a small bit of dialogue, this was to help show that a certain amount of time had passed. I did this by converting a clip of youtube and cutting it to get the part of the clip I wanted.

Over all I enjoyed the project and learnig about different techniques for both filming and editing. Looking back at my video the main things I would of liked to change if I could work on the project beyond the deadline would of been to add the animation but due to the file having errors, I was unable to do this. I would also liked to have edited the sound even more like having the music either completely go or to be even more quiet whilst the dialouge is used.
