Unit 4 Communication through art and design

This is my pop art version of sonic.

These are all of my different font styles.

This is what i created using the pen tool on Adobe illustrator.

These are my mood board for the visual recipe of pizza

I then went on to do a bit of research on pizza's origin

After that i made a moodboard of possible art styles for the project
I then went on to choose pixel art, here is a moodboard of pixel styled ingredients

This is my finished product

This is the start of my music festival work.

This is a moodboard on typography.
This is a colour moodboard on the most common colours i will use.
These are the 3 main fonts i will likely use or take inspiration from.

In this work i am hoping to achieve two posters of a music festival. In one poster i am planning on creating it in a typogeraphy style, I will be planning on making a big wheel spelled out in the word carnival, this is because the festival i have chosen is also a carnival this is why i want to create that shape, i will then also add circles around the type, these will contain the names of the acts performing through out the day. On my other poster which wont be based on typogeraph, it will likely contain a big wheel again but only showing three carridges, which will contain the 3 main acts at the show. The other acts will shown on balloons floating next to the big wheel.
The fonts i will use for the posters will be a donut font i found, this is because the main group who run the festivals main logo is the letters OF made out of American style donuts.
These are some moodboards i have created full of images i will be taking inspiration from for my design.
To create these posters i am at first going to draw the posters and then scanning it in, then life tracing it on Illustrator and filling the posters in with a few different designs of each with different colour schemes.
This moodboard focuses on the main structures you will see at a typical American carnival.
My favorite image from this moodboard is probably the lowest picture, which has in bold writing "CANDY". This is a font i like and would like to try and create my own version of this. I would probably use that font to list the acts performing at the show.
This moodboard focuses on the style of American donut used by OF and what I am planning to use aswell. Out of this moodboard i really like the image at the top spelling out donut, although in my design the donuts will not have blue icing. The idea i have at the moment is for pink icing and blue sprinkles. The main plan i have for my work is too only spell 'OF' in the donut font, the rest in the carnival font.

This moodboard is focused on anything realted to the sort of music that will be performed at the festival. A key theme in these images are brighter colours on dark or plain backgrounds, this is something i would like to put into my posters. Such as a white or blue background with the images placed upon them. An image i like alot out of these is the sterio which has donuts where the speakers are and i am thinking of trying to create an image inspired by this image.

Design report

During unit 4 I have learned how to use certain techniques and tools on adobe illustrator. Such as how to use the pen tool to create paths, or how to create custom swatches. I also learned how to create paths that I can add type too.
I then used these skills in helping me create two festival posters; one mainly using typography and the other can be mainly imagery. For this work I chose a music festival instead of a food or film festival. I chose an existing music festival that has been held for the past two years, the odd future carnival.
I first developed some ideas when I started to sketch some carnival themed items and though if I could place the music acts names inside them, for instance placing an acts name on a carriage on a big wheel or on a balloon. I then settled on the idea for my type-based poster, which is for the word carnival to be shaped like a big wheel and to then have the acts names in line with each letter. I then decided that for the other poster I would paste the acts names in balloons floating around the title, “OF Carnival”.

I would rate my typography-based poster a six or seven out of ten. This is because I think the finished product looks a little empty around the outside; this is because there is a lot of open space on the left and right hand side. Other than that I think the work went well and the font is quite affective.
I would then rate the other poster a seven out of ten. This is because I feel I used all the space well with a mixture of good imagery (the balloons) and all the text describing the title and acts performing at the festival.
I feel the colour schemes I used on both posters work well; this is probably because they are the main primary colours, with an exception of green or pink. I used a monochromatic colour scheme for the balloon or carnival fonts, this is because I think the effect makes them look like they are almost 3-D.

During production I encountered a few problems such as being unable to open the work I did at home, which lead to me being forced to re start certain parts of my work such as the balloon designs and a few carriages for the big wheel I was planning on using for the main imagery poster.

If I was to re create or if I had more time I would like to improve on a few ideas. One of these was too add the three carriages of the big wheel I was going to add to the imagery poster if I didn’t encounter a few problems whilst creating certain parts of my work at home.
I would also like to improve on adding to the empty space on the type-based poster, I was thinking of using typography to create the shapes of balloons spelling out the venue or dates.

Since receving feedback on my first 2 original posters i have decided to re create them. The first thing i decided to do was to make the main imagery poster more simple and plain, this was for two reasons; to make it more easy to understand or to make it more easy on the eye. I did this by taking the logo and font and placing it inside a sort of banner shape. I then went on to edit the colours around to find the best colour scheme to make the poster look more profesional. For the type themed poster I took more inspiration from real carnival posters. After doing this i decided to draw an outline of a carnival tent and then put it into the poster. After this, like the others i decided to change all the colour schemes to find the most pleasing.

These are all poster i have have either started from scratch or edited in order to make them look more attractive and more profesional.

And these two are my favorite out of the edited ones.
